United Kingdom Ordnance Survey Maps…
Our competitors take in the raw OS map tiles and ship them out as-the-same-tiles in packages. It's as simple as that. No processing and no engineering required but all you get is a map with basic elements, although a competitors map it may look the same as RouteBuddy's it is far from it in quality, design and engineering.

RouteBuddy take the raw map tiles…
  • Process all of the 234,411 map tiles as one map layer.
  • Reproject the Ordnance Survey map data to a modern projection, the same as Google Maps and Apple Maps use; you can then use any RouteBuddy map (from any supplier) with another one and layer online maps over RouteBuddy Topo Maps.
  • Create multiple layers and create a zoom-level for each layer.
  • Add all layers together as 'a map'.
  • Compress all layers into a tiny storage file.
  • Add engineering that decompresses maps and zoom-levels on-the-fly.
  • Place on our store the fastest zoom and pan OS maps available.
Note:
Ordnance Survey and Harvey currently use the very dated 200 year old Airy Projection, which suited the isolated Britain back then; this is now very outdated for modern map use when maps need to be viewed from a global perspective. The other advantage is that RouteBuddy's engineering has un-skewed the Airy view of Britain and now show the island ion a contemporary global context. With an added bonus of leaving the grid lines intact and totally accurate as well as all North grid lines now point to the true North.
There is a wide range of custom maps RouteBuddy can create from raw Ordnance Survey map data and if you have ideas for custom maps or an event you'd like supported then feel fee to contact us via support.

USGS TOPO maps - Choice | Type | Quality
The United States Geological Survey have been producing maps since the 1880s and their output in look, style and design has varied greatly over the years and from state to state. Notably for the detailed 1:24k USGS Topo's, which hikers prefer to use, the production was phased out by 2010 (with the majority of these maps having not been updated since the 90s or beforehand). However what replaced them (PDF versions) wasn't exactly what hikers wanted; in short, although the replacements are far clearer in detail, these PDF topos exclude many of the tracks, trails and eclectic map data that hikers have come to rely on for navigation purposes. So not an easy choice.

Classic Topos
From RouteBuddy's point of view we are shipping the best classic topo maps we've been able to find at a snapshot in time and, although quality can vary by some degree, the maps still show you where you are when navigating, offer way more detail than online map only apps ever do, and still are, to this day, the only detailed offline topo maps to cover such vast areas of the United States as well as being available as seamless maps.
Nota bene: Classic USGS maps vary in colour, scan quality and applied detail (boundary lines etc).

PDF Topos
Over time we expect things will change and a greater amount of detail will be added to USGS Topo PDF maps; when we feel that the included navigation data offers a better value to hikers we will then start to process these new topo PDF maps.
USGS Topo maps - Free maps VS. RouteBuddy's GeoCorrected, Processed and Seamless Maps
- Free
It is possible to buy competitors apps that, after paying for the app, will load free USGS Libre maps. However free comes with a price! The fact that these old maps haven't been corrected for location errors (some can be up to 800 feet away from the actual location) the map quads are large in size, take a long time to download (so you need a good WiFi connection) and have white collars and data around their sides.
- Slow
When in use these free topo's are incredibly slow to load, pan or and zoom in and out and, lastly, are not seamless, so not offering you the opportunity to navigate without having the continual pain of having to keep flipping between each of the maps when crossing from one to another along the trail. These 'free maps' will also take up a vast amount of storage space on your iOS device when compared to RouteBuddy's compressed topo maps which are fast to install, load and use but still offering the same original resolution. Free always comes with a price!

The RouteBuddy Advantages - GeoCorrected, Processed and Seamless
RouteBuddy USGS Maps are seamless which brings many advantages individual map quad downloads. It is not only because the maps are seamless but also because we process the data to make it smaller in size, but keeping the same resolution

Our Topo map versions can be loaded with other maps (say state to adjoining state) and layered with other maps over and under or even Microsoft Bing satellite map overlay (desktop only).
If you need custom maps for business or research then feel free to contact us.

  • Process all of the thousands of map tiles as one map layer.
  • Reproject the IGN map data to a modern projection, the same as Google Maps and Apple Maps use; you can then use any RouteBuddy map (from any supplier) with another one and layer online maps over RouteBuddy Topo Maps.
  • Create multiple layers and create a zoom-level for each layer.

Note:
France IGN currently use the 'Lambert 93' Projection, which suits France maps 'in isolation'; however 'local' map projections are now very outdated for modern map use when maps need to be viewed from a global perspective. The advantage to RouteBuddy's map engineering is that we have un-skewed the Lamber 93 view of France, and its domains overseas, and now show the maps in a contemporary global context. With an added bonus of leaving the grid lines intact and totally accurate as well as all North grid lines now pointing to true North.

Why are RouteBuddy's TOPO Maps the best choice?
RouteBuddy's maps represent the best buy for the customer, whichever format you choose. High quality and a competitive price, why compromise with anything else?
We don't sell customers expensive map tiles, you get just the map you need from RouteBuddy, not the unwanted and wasted parts of tiles as sold elsewhere. (Buying by tile costs a lot more due to the number of many extra tiles you need to cover an area or trail, and with up to 10sq. No wasted time for you in creating a map from tiles, we've already done the work and removed waste!
Always best to use Old and New Technology - With PRINTED* Maps in one hand and DIGITAL Maps in the other!
All of our Topo maps are built with RouteBuddy's unique and advanced map-compression-technology, offering smooth zoom and pan from our pre-rendered tiles that no other vendor is able to offer.
